Bürkert valve positioners provide precise, automated positioning of pneumatic process control valves for applications that require more than simple ON/OFF operation. Types 8692 and 8694 integrate directly with compatible process valves to monitor valve position, adjust the valve to the required set point, and support reliable process control in hygienic applications.

A valve positioner continuously adjusts a pneumatic control valve to a commanded position. Instead of operating only fully open or fully closed, the positioner can move the valve to intermediate positions to regulate flow or other process conditions. The positioner compares the requested valve position with the actual valve position and adjusts the pneumatic actuator as needed to maintain the desired setting.
An ON/OFF control top is primarily used to open or close a pneumatic valve and confirm its position. A valve positioner is used when the valve needs to operate at positions between fully open and fully closed. This allows the valve to continuously regulate the process rather than simply starting or stopping flow.
Both positioners provide automatic positioning and contactless valve position sensing, but they are designed for different levels of automation. The Type 8694 is Bürkert's BASIC positioner and provides straightforward valve positioning with options such as 4–20 mA, AS-Interface, IO-Link, and Bürkert system bus. The Type 8692 adds a graphic display, expanded diagnostics and configuration capabilities, and additional industrial communication options including EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP, and PROFIBUS DP-V1.
Both positioners can be integrated with Bürkert process control valves including:
Adapters are also available for certain third-party pneumatic actuators. The appropriate positioner and adapter depend on the valve, actuator, and application requirements.
Both Types 8692 and 8694 use an automatic X.TUNE function that adjusts the positioner to the valve during commissioning. The Type 8692 also provides additional configuration and diagnostic functions through its graphic display and Bürkert Communicator software.
The right positioner depends on the control requirements, actuator configuration, communication system, and level of diagnostics required. As a general guide:
